Little children, guard yourselves from idols.

Be on Guard
In the Old Testament, after the people of Israel had plundered the Egyptians and crossed the Red Sea, they grew complacent in their relationship to God. Even after God provided for them over and over, they lost their focus on Him. When Moses went up on Mt. Sinai to receive the 10 Commandments, the people formed an idol of a calf out of their riches and began to run around wildly. God’s judgement fell on the people because of their idolatry.
One may wonder: How could a group of people who had witnessed God’s faithfulness over and over again act in such a manner? We may even naively think, “I would never act like this.” However, the reality is that our walk with Jesus Christ must be daily. Every day, we need to live by abiding in our relationship with Jesus Christ
In this text, John is warning believers of the allurement of idols. Anything that would draw our attention away from that which is ultimate can be a form of idolatry. Even things that may not be sinful in and of themselves can certainly become idols. Idols can take the form of money, prestige, sports, travel, movies, television, fame, family, marriage, or even relaxation. So, guard your heart to ensure that nothing hinders your daily personal worship of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Is there anything you treasure more in your life than your relationship with Jesus Christ? If so, confess that sin to the Lord and make Jesus your number one priority.
