but speaking the truth in love…

Truth-Telling

Telling the truth can often be more difficult than one may think. Sometimes when we are at fault, we don’t want others to know about the mistakes we have made, so we remain silent. At other times, when people point out our mistakes, we can act defensive and upset as we protect our own ego. Moreover, when we see the wrongs of others or ways that they have hurt us, we keep it to ourselves or gossip with other people.

However, silence isn’t the only way that we miss the mark. Some people refer to themselves as “truth-tellers” simply as an excuse to bully and belittle others. When confronted about their contentious attitude, they often respond, “I was just telling the truth.”

God’s Word teaches us to tell the truth and to do that in love. This means that I am willing to be candid while at the same time having the best interest of others. Speaking the truth in love is extremely challenging, but is possible by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells inside of every believer. Jesus Christ was, is, and will always be a truth-teller and will always do so in love.

Is there a person you need to speak the truth in love with today? I encourage you to pray and let the Lord guide your conversation.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus. Thank You for being the model of speaking the truth in love. Would You give me the courage to daily be a person who lives and speaks the truth in a loving way? May I be known for my candor, integrity and love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
